Owego Free Academy students have been studying the effects of road salt on the surrounding environment.
When road salt dissolves into melting snow, it flows into storm drains and eventually into rivers and lakes.
According to WBNG-TV, the OFA students sampled the water before the winter season to learn more about salt’s effect on the environment.
The students gathered and tested samples at the flood retention basin in Endicott and the Town of Union salt barn.
The data collected will be put into a database to better inform local officials on using less salt on icy roads and the correlation between road salt and the health of local groundwater.
