The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash on Interstate 81 in Binghamton.
The three-car accident occurred at around 11:05 a.m. on Thursday on I-81 South at the off-ramp of Exit 12.
First responders found a U-Haul truck on fire with the driver trapped inside.
Members of the Sheriff’s Office and New York State Department of Transportation worked to put out the fire.
The driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to the UHS Wilson Medical Center, where he later passed away from his injuries.
An investigation revealed that the U-Haul, which was towing a vehicle, was traveling south on 81 after merging from State Route 18 east and approaching the off-ramp of Exit 12.
A red SUV attempted to merge across several lanes to take the Exit 12 off-ramp and struck the U-Haul, which then collided with a New York State Department of Transportation truck.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
