Every April, fire departments across New York hold events looking to find more volunteer firefighters.
The Owego Fire Department will be one of 300 fire departments looking to recruit new members this Saturday.
The local department will open up its doors to the public and show the community some of the opportunities they have available.
According to the Firefighters Association of the State of New York, membership numbers have dropped by 32 percent statewide. Meanwhile, the volume of calls increased by 29 percent from 1998 to 2021.
Despite the decrease in membership, the Owego Fire Department and other departments throughout the area continue to answer the call when needed.
The Owego Fire Department will host the Open House at the Owego Central Fire Station at 87 North Ave. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday.
