The Tioga County IDA has been awarded a major grant for a potential rail-with-trail project.

The $450,000 will be dedicated to a preliminary engineering study for the project.

The study will explore a trail design running alongside the Owego Hartford Railroad, stretching from the Newark Valley Fire Station to George Smith Park in Berkshire.

This grant is for the preliminary design and engineering phase only. It is the essential first step to determine how a trail could be built, but it does not cover the actual construction at this stage.

Here is the complete press release from Team Tioga:

The Tioga County IDA has been awarded $450,000 from the Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) Environmental Protection Funds!
What’s the plan?
These funds are dedicated specifically to a preliminary engineering study for a potential “rail-with-trail.”
👣 The Route: The study will explore a trail design running alongside the Owego Hartford Railroad, stretching from the Newark Valley Fire Station to George Smith Park in Berkshire.
🏆 The Goal: This is a “rail-with-trail” concept, meaning the design would allow for a trail to coexist safely next to the active rail line.
👉 Important Note: This grant is for the preliminary design and engineering phase only. It is the essential first step to determine how a trail could be built, but it does not cover the actual construction at this stage.
We are looking forward to seeing how this project could better connect our communities and showcase the natural beauty of Tioga County!
Stay tuned for updates as we begin this important planning process.
