Candor man charged after allegedly stabbing stepbrother

A 54-year-old Candor man has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed his stepbrother last week.

According to the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office, John D. Penalvert has been charged with felony counts of assault in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree.

He is also facing three misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child due to the incident taking place in front of young children.

An investigation revealed that a 37-year-old male was stabbed in the abdomen by the suspect during a domestic incident.

The victim was transported in a personal vehicle to the Lourdes walk-in facility in Owego before being transported to Wilson Hospital where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

Penalvert reportedly fled into a wooded area following the incident. Tioga County Sheriff’s Office Investigators, Deputies and members of the New York State Police immediately began searching for Penalvert. The Tioga County Drone Unit was deployed and performed an aerial search, and a New York State Police canine performed a track of the suspect.

Penalvert was located approximately 2.5 miles from the residence by Sheriff Deputies and taken into custody without incident. Investigators executed a search warrant at the residence and on Penalvert’s person.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the New York State Police and Campville EMS.

Penalvert was remanded to the Tioga County Jail without bail.
