A GoFundMe page has been set up to help a local restaurant owner who was recently detained by Immigration and Custom Enforcement.

Roger Huang, who owns Kam Fung Restaurant in Owego, was on his way to a scheduled appointment to finalize his green card application process on June 16 when he was detained by ICE agents. He remains in federal custody at a facility in Batavia.

According to the Morning Times, a spokesman for ICE said Huang entered the United States with a fraudulent document in Miami in 1993 and failed to appear before an immigration judge in 1994.

According to the GoFundMe page, Huang left Communist China to flee political prosecution after unrest around the time of the Tiananmen Square protests. He has been registered with ICE since 2012 with a plan in place to get a green card after 12 years of monitoring.

Many in the Owego community have come out in support of Huang, who has been a business owner since 1996 and has become well known in the area.

Prominent businessman Adam Weitsman has contributed to Huang’s cause, and the GoFundMe has raised over $17,000 as of Friday morning.
