A 35-year-old Ithaca man was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly broke into a closed business in the Town of Ithaca.

Deputies from the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office were conducting routine property checks of closed businesses on the 600 block of Elmira Road when they observed a suspicious male walk away from the rear of one of a closed business

Because there had been recent larcenies and burglaries in the area, a deputy attempted to speak with the individual, but the male suspect fled on foot. After a lengthy search, the suspect was taken into custody without incident on Five Mile Drive.

Upon further investigation it was determined that a burglary had in fact taken place on the 600 Block of Elmira Road and that the fleeing subject matched the suspect description.

Michael J. Thomas was charged with burglary in the third degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree and possession of burglar tools. He was found to be on parole for similar crimes and remanded without bail.
