One killed in crash on Interstate 86 in Nichols

A 70-year-old man was killed in a two-car crash on Interstate 86 in Nichols on Friday.

According to the New York State Police, the accident occurred at around 2 a.m. on Friday.

A Mitsubishi SUV was traveling west on the highway when the car went off the roadway and struck a guard rail. The car became disabled in the right lane.

A tractor trailer struck the SUV and went off the roadway, down an embankment before striking a tree.

The operator of the tractor trailer was located inside the cab deceased; he is at this time being identified as a 70-year-old male from Ontario.

The driver of the SUV did not report any injuries. Police said he did not show any signs of impairment.

Members of the Nichols Volunteer Fire Department, Tioga Center Fire & EMS and the Tioga Sheriff’s Department assisted on scene.

The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) assisted with the road closure.

Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to the scene.

The accident is under investigation.
