Owego American Legion heading to court over new sign

A sign that was donated to the Owego American Legion Post 401 in honor of the late Matt Howe has caused some controversy in the village.

According to WBNG-TV, the placement of the illuminated sign at the Legion on Front Street has brought a code violation from the Village of Owego over it lacking a building permit.

Another issue is that with the Legion being in Owego’s Historic District, they must receive approval from the Owego Historic Preservation District for the illuminated sign.

Legion members voted to place the sign outside of Post 401 regardless and have created a petition for it to stay. The sign was donated in honor of Howe, who was an Owego Legion member who lost his life in 2019 in a highway work zone accident.

The court hearing for the matter was pushed back due to the judge recusing himself from the case.
