A proposal to limit cooperation with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement within the Village of Spencer has been voted down.
According to the Morning Times, dozens of people showed up to a village board meeting to speak in favor and against the proposal.
The proposal by Mayor Gilbert Knapp and the village’s legal counsel was in response to resident outcry over local ICE enforcement, including the arrest of 10 individuals in the Village of Spencer in June. Those arrested reportedly worked at a nearby farm.
The proposal stated that village departments should prioritize enforcement of local and state law and should not use village resources to cooperate with ICE investigations or arrests related to civil provisions of federal immigration law.
The proposal did not pass at the meeting on Monday night with the board members split evenly and one member abstaining.
Mayor Knapp said he does not plan to reintroduce another version of the policy in the future.
