The Village of Owego is continuing to look at a potential law on keeping chickens in the village.

According to the Morning Times, Owego Deputy Mayor Charles Plater told residents at a meeting on Monday that the village has received complaints about rodents and has led the village board to look for solutions to the problem.

The village has worked with the Cornell Cooperative Extension, Tioga County Public Health Department and Tioga County Soil and Water on the issue.

Village attorney Nathan VanWhy told residents that the village has not drafted a proposed law at this point. Once that is done, there will be a public hearing so residents can give input on the proposal before the board votes on the issue.

One resident pointed out that there are already existing codes to prohibit noise and mess associated with animals in the village.
