The Ithaca Police Department is reminding residents and visitors to use extreme caution when visiting the many gorges and trails in Ithaca. With temperatures dipping below freezing and with the inlet beginning to freeze, ice that appears to be thick and safe to walk on can in fact be dangerously thin. Some state and local trails have closed, and more are soon to follow. Please follow posted signs and do not veer away from a designated path, even if it appears safe to do so. Folks walking and hiking in the gorges are encouraged to dress appropriate for the weather, use the buddy system, and bring a cell phone with you if possible. If you or someone you see is in danger please call 911 immediately and give calm, clear directions. Chief Tyler encourages parents to communicate these important safety messages to their children.
