A fatal motor vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer claimed the life of the driver late Friday night in the Town of Fenton.

On Friday, January 2, 2026 at approximately 11:57 p.m., members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a single tractor trailer on Interstate Route 88 near Exit 3 in the Town of Fenton.

The tractor trailer was found over the embankment on its side in a drainage ditch located on the east side of Route 88. Road Patrol deputies broke the windshield of the tractor trailer cab, extracted the operator and began CPR until EMS arrived on the scene to continue lifesaving actions. However, the operator of the tractor trailer, Vicky Chadwick, age 54 of Monessen, PA, was declared deceased at the scene.

The BCSO Accident Reconstruction Team’s preliminary investigation revealed that the tractor trailer was traveling West on Route 88, passing the Exit 3 on-ramp, when it drifted from the right lane into the left lane. The tractor trailer continued through the left lane, into the center median and across the eastbound lanes of travel before going off the roadway, turning onto its side and coming to rest in a drainage ditch. A witness observed the event and called 911.

Traffic on Route I-88 E was restricted to one lane of travel until approximately 5:30 a.m. on Saturday as crews dealt with cleanup of the site, which included spilled diesel fuel and antifreeze from the semi-truck.

The Broome County Sheriff Office was assisted by the Port Crane Fire Department, Broome Volunteer Emergency Squad, New York State Department of Transportation, Chenango Bridge Fire, and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Response.
