The victim in the officer-involved shooting in Vestal on Wednesday has passed away.
According to the Vestal Police Department, 38-year-old Vestal resident Eslam Ahmed Hegazy died as a result of his injuries sustained in the shooting.
The incident started at around 11:36 a.m. on Sequoia Lane when officers responded to a report of an individual experiencing a mental health crisis.
Police said a man was in possession of a knife and threatening self-harm. Officers made numerous requests for the individual to drop the knife, but he ignored commands and allegedly threw a television at officers.
Hegazy allegedly threatened officers, raised the knife and advanced toward one officer. Shots were fired by police and Hegazy was struck.
Vestal Police requested the New York State Police conduct an independent investigation. The case will now be referred to the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
