A new law banning the use of handheld electronic devices while driving will take effect in Pennsylvania on June 5th.

The law would make it a primary offense for motorists to operate an interactive mobile device while driving.

For the first year, violated will receive a written warning, but starting on June 5, 2026 the offense will carry a $50 fine plus court costs and fees. Drivers convicted of homicide by vehicle while distracted may face up to an additional five years in prison.

Pennsylvania already has a ban on texting while driving. The new law will prohibit drivers from holding or supporting a mobile device with any part of the body, pressing more than a single button to activate or deactivate a function or reaching for a device in a way that takes them out of a seated, seatbelt restrained position.
