Student teams from Newark Valley and Tioga Central high schools have advanced to the finals of CHOICE 102’s 41st annual Scholarship Challenge after winning the first found of the competition Saturday at the Sayre Theater.
The two other teams to play in the championship finals will be determined at second round competition this Saturday, March 6. The schedule is:
- 10 a.m. Athens “Black” versus Northeast Bradford and North Rome Christian Academy versus Waverly
- 2 p.m. Loyalsock versus Sayre and Spencer-Van Etten versus Towanda
Congratulations to Athens “Silver,” Canton, Notre Dame, Montrose, Troy and Wyalusing for their outstanding accomplishments in the first round.
The championship event is set for Saturday, March 13, tentatively set for noon, also at the Sayre Theater. High school students compete in a Q&A format to win a purse of $7,000 for their school.
This year, Your Hometown Station WEBO has joined WATS/WAVR in the Scholarship Challenge.
There are normally 24 teams, including Owego Free Academy, but several could participate this year because of COVID. Also, there had been a Junior High/Middle School Scholarship Challenge, but it was cancelled this year due to COVID.
The venue was moved to the Sayre Theater (because Guthrie is using Patterson Auditorium for COVID vaccinations). All CDC guidelines are being followed to ensure the safety of contestants, advisors and staff. Due to capacity restrictions (10% for theaters), no in-person audience is permitted.
Scholarship Challenge is, of course, broadcast on Choice 102 (102.1 FM WAVR & 960 AM WATS) and also on WEBO’s five signals (98.5 FM Owego, 101.3 FM Candor, 105.1 FM Valley, 107.9 FM Binghamton and 1330 AM).
