The Valley lost a dedicated community leader earlier this month as longtime Athens Borough Mayor George C. Whyte passed away on Dec. 15th.

Whyte was first elected mayor in 1993 and served his community with dedication and commitment for 24 years.

Whyte joined the Athens Borough Fire Department in 1966 and was serving as Fire Chief during the Agnes Flood of 1972. He was in charge of emergency services, operations and recovery efforts during the flood, even while his own home was under water.

He was also a lifelong member of the Penn York Highlanders, first joining in 1960 and serving as pipe major until 2015.

Those looking to honor George Whyte can make a donation to a local animal shelter or a charity of one’s choice in his memory.
