Before taking a holiday recess, the Tioga Hills Elementary School teamed up with local organizations, including the Park Terrace Community Food Pantry and the Apalachin Lions Club, to make a difference in their community.
Mrs. Gilliland’s and Mrs. Schake’s fifth-grade classes continued their Community Box Project. This is a holiday tradition that completes a social studies unit on wants and needs, and gives the fifth-graders an opportunity to learn a lesson in kindness.
At home, students and their families filled shoeboxes with personal care items. Students brought the filled boxes to be wrapped in the classroom and then walked down Glann Road to deliver 65 boxes filled with toiletries and
other essentials to the Park Terrace Community Food Pantry.
During November, the school resumed its support of the Apalachin Lions Club Holiday Food Drive. Students and their families were challenged to collect over 500 non-perishable food items for the food drive.
