Smoking Rates Decline While e-Cigarettes Increase in Popularity

The adult smoking rate in New York state has fallen to the lowest percentage since records were first recorded. The statewide, adult smoking rate is 14.2 percent, a 22 percent decline from 2011. The nationwide average is 15.5 Percent. Smoking among young adults from 18 to 24 years of age have fallen from 21.6 percent in 2011 to 11.7 percent in 2016. The New York State Department of Health survey also noted that high school age smoking had declined from 27.1 percent in 2000 to 4.3 percent in 2016. The importance of that statistic was weakened by the
finding that high school age use of e-cigarettes had grown from 10.5 percent in 2014 to 20.6 percent in 2016.
