Southern Tier Mourns the Loss of a Local Hero

The Southern Tier is mourning the loss of a local hero.  New York State Trooper Nicholas Clark was killed during an incident in the Steuben County Town of Erwin. The incident 3:30 AM incident occurred near the campus of Corning Community College. The suspect in this shooting is also dead from a self-inflicted wound.

29-year-old Trooper Clark was called to a reported suicidal person barricaded inside the residence on Welch Road in the town of Erwin. The suspect has been identified as 43-year-old Steven Kiley. His estranged wife made the 911 call that Kiley was threatening suicide. Kiley was the K-12 principal at the Bradford (NY) Central School District, which is between Hammondsport and Watkins Glen.  During the incident, a Steuben County Sheriff’s Deputy risked his life bringing Trooper Clark to a safe location after he was shot.

Trooper Clark joined the State Police in March of 2015, and served as a Trooper in Ithaca and Auburn; until his last assignment in Bath. Trooper Clark is survived by his father, mother, and brother.

Trooper Clark graduated from Alfred University, where he was an all-American linebacker, participated in the 2012 Buffalo Bills rookie camp, and was also an all-state wrestler at Canisteo-Greenwood. Clark lived in Troupsburg.

His body was transported by the Steuben County Coroner’s Office to Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton with a State Police escort to perform the autopsy. It passed through Owego around noon, and returned around 5pm with the same escort.

The incident did not involve students or staff from Corning Community College. Police are used a parking lot on the campus as a temporary headquarters.
