It’s week No. 8 for the COVID-19 coronavirus to dominate the news each day in the Southern Tier. It’s only the month of May but a big question being asked by hundreds of school district superintendents is: “What about summer school in New York state?” Gov. Andrew Cuomo decided to keep schools closed through the end of this current term in June. The governor’s answer to the question: “I’ll get back to you by the end of the month.” Cuomo – using his measured approach to decisions about closing or reopening – wants to and wait and see the status of the state from the COVID-19 crisis during the next couple weeks before deciding whether classes will be no or go for this summer.

In the meantime, Cuomo wants school district administrators to start putting together a definitive reopening plan that includes all the safeguards already in effect across New York state – social distancing, face coverings, washing hands. Likewise, colleges and universities will also need to submit plans with for reopening with COVID-19 precautions on their campuses.
