Stolen Car Runs Out of Gas, Chenango Forks Man Nabbed Walking Away

On Tuesday afternoon, officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office were called to Route 26 in the Town of Willet for report of a suspicious-acting person on foot. Officers and located a male was identified as 23-year old Jason M. McCrady of Chenango Forks, Broome County.

Officers learned McCrady had operated a 2009 Hyundai SUV and ran out of gas while traveling in the area.  Officers checked McCrady learned he had driven the SUV while under the influence of drugs/alcohol, and was subsequently arrested. During the investigation, officers, also found the Hyundai vehicle was reported stolen out of the State of Virginia.

Officers charged McCrady with two felonies:

  • NY State Penal Law section 165.40 – Criminal Possession of Stolen Property – Class E-Felony
  • NY State Vehicle and Traffic Law section 1192(4) – Driving While Ability Impaired Drugs — Misdemeanor
  • NY State Vehicle and Traffic Law section 511.3(a) – Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st Degree–Felony
  • NY State Vehicle and Traffic Law section 509.1 – Unlicensed Operator – Traffic Infraction

McCrady was arraigned and released on his own recognizance to return to the Town of Willet Court in mid February.
