Pennsylvania will join New York on July 1 to ban tobacco sales, cigarettes or e-cigarettes to anyone under 21 years of age. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf signed legislation this week. “I want to make sure kids are not adopting addictive behavior,” Wolf said. “We should not expose our children to addictive behavior and smoking with nicotine is something that is addictive.”
Under the new law, smoking will be prohibited for students and adults. A local school board may designate an outdoor smoking area. New York has banned smoking on school grounds for years.
Violations would be summary offenses in Pennsylvania, usually punishable by fines.
The new law will not effect Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana program.
