Union-Endicott High School Senior Students Achieve Eagle Scout Rank

Troy Fenstemacher and Craig Amlin, senior students at Union-Endicott High School, recently achieved Eagle Scout rank, the highest achievement attainable with the Boy Scouts of America. One of the many requirements to be considered for this honor is planning and completing an extensive service project that benefits the community where the scout lives.

For his project, Craig designed, planned and built a storage unit for the percussion equipment belonging to the U-E Marching Band. With the help of Habitat for Humanity Core Crew leader Joe Ciccarino, Craig built the unit to hold percussion stands, easy access, organized areas for specific instruments and weather-proof to protect the instruments throughout the year. In addition, Craig raised all the funds to pay for this project, which included collecting a truck load of bottles and cans for the deposit money. After graduation, Craig plans to major in computer science and game design at either SUNY Poly or RIT.

For his project, Troy worked closely with the Church of the Holy Family garden ministry in Endwell. After interviewing members on need, concerns and wishes, he designed and built a raised garden bed for vegetables. The vegetables from the garden are used by the local CHOW/food pantry, and for the church’s dinners to help feed the needy in the community. The project took approximately 50 hours to complete, from the prep work to the finished project, with a handful of volunteers to help put it together. After graduation, Troy will be attending the College of Environmental Science and Forestry to get a bachelor’s degree in natural resource management and plans to become a game warden.
