The Homer Fire Department, in Cortland County, is deeply saddened to report the line of duty death of Firefighter Robert Bush on Saturday, October 19 at a fire department training.
Statement below from Homer Chief Mahlon Irish Jr:
I’m very sad to report that we (Homer Fire Department and I as Fire Chief) must report a line of duty death (LODD) of firefighter Robert Bush. FF Bush was feeling ill at a training and medical assistance was immediately initiated by members of our department and FF Bush was transported to the local hospital where revival efforts continued, however the outcome was unsuccessful.
I cannot express how proud I am of our members who initiated treatment. This is the worst case scenario in my mind when we have to render aid to one of our own.
I also need to express our thanks to other fire departments that have expressed their sympathy and their willingness to assist in any way needed ….. THANK YOU!
This was one of the toughest days not only for me but the members who first handedly had to take care of the situation. Once again proud of our members.
