Remember, if you travel by car today or Christmas through New Year’s Day, Cortland County Sheriff Mark Helms sent a news release to WEBO with a reminder law enforcement agencies in the Southern Tier are on patrol for the annual Christmas crackdown on impaired driving. The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown started on December 18 and continues through January 1.

Research shows that high-visibility enforcement efforts can reduce impaired driving fatalities as much as 20 percent. Don’t be surprised if you get stopped at a Sobriety Checkpoint … police say that’s one of the most visible ways to raise awareness about the problem.

This STOP-DWI Holiday Crackdown is one of several statewide enforcement campaigns against drunken and impaired driving through the year. The others are the 4th of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Super Bowl weekend and St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
