A person is dead and a New York State Trooper was wounded during a shoot-out last night on Route 17 in Kirkwood. State police issued a statement saying that shortly after 6:20 p.m. Monday night a State Trooper observed a vehicle wanted in connection with a criminal complaint. As the Trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, it took evasive action and subsequently stopped on Route 17 eastbound. When the suspect vehicle stopped, the driver allegedly opened fire and exchanged gunfire with the Trooper. During the encounter, the suspect was fatally wounded. The Trooper was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. State police have not yet released the names of those involved. Route 17 was closed for several hours. It reopened around 10 p.m.
