More than $3.4 million in Southern Tier projects are expected to begin this fall to help flood-prone communities plan and prepare for extreme weather events such as Tropical Storm Lee. The funding is part of more than $41.1 million in NY Rising Community Reconstruction projects that are to get underway across the state this fall.

The awards announced today for the Southern Tier Region are:

1) Stillwater Road Storm Water Improvements in the Town of Conklin – $313,767: The Stillwater Road Storm Water Improvements Project will install a storm water drainage system along Stillwater Road through a privately-owned parcel that discharges into the river. This will mitigate flooding in the area and keep an evacuation route open for the residents living in the Stillwater Road neighborhood, which had previously experienced access issues. Construction is expected to start in October.

2) Water Department Maintenance/Storage Building Replacement Project, Village of Johnson City – $444,850: With the Village of Johnson City previously experiencing severe flooding, the Water Department Maintenance/ Storage Building Project will ensure that critical facilities are protected against the impacts of future storms. As part of the effort, the old Water Department administration and operations building will be demolished, and a new maintenance and storage building will be constructed at a higher elevation. This will ensure that the facility can remain operational, even during flooding or other extreme weather events. Construction began in late summer and is expected to be complete in February 2019.

3) Refuse Garage Relocation, Town of Union – $2,653,752: During Tropical Storm Lee, the Town of Union’s refuse garage was flooded, interrupting solid waste services and post-storm cleanup. A new refuse garage will be built at 2900 Wayne Street on town-owned land outside the floodplain. Construction began in September and should be complete by the end of August 2019.
