Coronavirus: Section 4 Basketball Teams On Hold in Championship Tourney

The dreams of hoisting state championship trophies were put on hold this week for Section 4 boys and girls basketball teams when the New York State Public High School Athletic Association postponed indefinitely the remaining games in the state playoffs due to restrictions on large crowds set by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the on-going effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Section 4 teams still in the boys tournament are: Binghamton AA, Johnson City A, Seton Catholic B, Newfield C and Marathon D. Girls team still playing in the state tournament are: Elmira AA, Maine-Endwell A and Norwich B.
In a news release, the NYSPHSAA said it certainly understood postponing the remaining winter state championships is disappointing, but the opportunity to participate in a championship event does not outweigh the association’s responsibility and obligation to ensure students participate in a healthy and safe environment.
The impacted events include Ice Hockey, Bowling, Boys and Girls Basketball Regional and State Championships.
NYSPHSAA Executive Director Dr. Robert Zayas said “It was my goal to complete the winter championships on schedule. It has become increasingly more difficult to host these championship events with the number of challenges that have been presented. I also have concerns as the executive director and a parent, that students will be participating in an event under circumstances that are not conducive to a quality and beneficial participation experience.”
As information becomes available, NYSPHSAA will provide updates.
