The Owego River Hawks football team made more history on Saturday as they won a wild 36-34 game over New Hartford in the state quarterfinals at Vestal High School.

Owego senior Dylan Brace kicked a field goal with time winding down to give the River Hawks the victory and punch their ticket to their first-ever state semifinals.

Owego led 33-13 midway through the third quarter but New Hartford quarterback John Vitullo and wide receiver Peyton Way led a comeback which saw the Spartans take a 34-33 lead with 2:28 left in the fourth.

The River Hawks weren’t done yet as senior QB Garrett Phelps led the game-winning drive with a pair of completions to Nolan Card and Atlas Boland. Phelps then used his legs to set up the game-winning field goal attempt.

Brace led Owego with 204 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while John Farrell had 29 rushing yards and two scores on just three carries.
