A fire broke out Saturday night at a local apartment building. The American Red Cross responded to shelter 41 people Saturday night. Firefighters responded to 259 Main Street in Binghamton. There are 19 apartments in the building. Of those apartments, 17 were occupied. The fire department believes the fire started on the 3rd floor of the apartment complex. It then spread into the attic. Firefighters had to pull out of the building when it started to show signs of an impending roof collapse. The Fire Chief says the building isn’t a total loss, and that the majority of the damage was the roof, and water damage throughout the building. Investigators don’t know at this point what the cause of the fire was. It is still under investigation. No firefighters were injured during the fire and the Binghamton Fire Department says the residents all got out safely. They were sheltered by the Red Cross at St. Mary’s Recreation Center on Hawley Street. The Red Cross also provided food, clothing, and emotional support.
