Monday, the City of Binghamton earned a federal sustainability designation that will likely put the city in better position for some federal grant programs looking forward. With the Preferred Sustainability Status, given to Binghamton by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, local businesses and non-profits will be able to request using the city’s special status to apply for grants. Only 90 other communities across the country have the designation that Binghamton now claims. In addition to putting itself in a better position to receive grants, the city will also now have more training opportunities and the chance to network with other municipalities that have received the designation.
