Half of the guard rail on a bridge in Richford was missing after an SUV slid off the bridge and crashed into the creek below. Two occupants of the SUV were forced to escape the car in the icy water. Officials from the Richford Volunteer Fire Department received the call around 4:30 Thursday afternoon. The SUV was traveling southbound on Route 38 near Owego Creek when it crossed over the median and crashed through the guard rail, flipped onto its side and came to rest in the creek. Both people in the vehicle were able to get themselves out of the SUV before emergency crews arrived, and both were treated in ambulances upon their arrival. Ice on the bridge is what officials say caused the crash. Route 38 was down to one lane for about two hours following the crash. The Richford Fire Department worked with the Tioga County Sheriff’s and Berkshire Fire Squad.
