More than 100 planners, advocates and community leaders are gathering Thursday at the Corning Museum of Glass for the first Southern Tier Greenways Planning Summit.

The sold-out event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 5, followed by an off-site networking gathering. Corning Mayor Pam Walker is scheduled to welcome participants at the start of the program.

Organizers say the summit will examine efforts to expand and connect a regional greenway trail network across the Southern Tier. Sessions will focus on current projects, planning challenges and opportunities for communities to coordinate future trail development.

The program also includes the release of new regional trail-network maps. The summit brings together representatives from the eight-county Southern Tier region, including planners, elected officials, business owners, tourism and health professionals, agency representatives and trail users.

Parks & Trails New York and the Three Rivers Development Corporation are among the organizations leading the daylong event. Organizers say the meeting is designed to turn individual local trail projects into a more connected regional system.

The summit is being held in the Corning Museum of Glass auditorium at 1 Museum Way in Corning.
