New York State Police have charged a Corning man in connection with a June hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a bicyclist on East Corning Road.
Police identified the defendant as 34-year-old Casimiro Johnson. Investigators allege that the driver left the scene after striking the bicyclist and later claimed that damage to the involved vehicle had been caused by hitting a deer.
Johnson faces felony assault and leaving-the-scene charges, along with an evidence-tampering charge. The charges are allegations and do not establish guilt.
The bicyclist suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken for hospital treatment. State Police said the bicyclist was later released from the hospital. No further information about the person’s recovery was included in the police announcement.
Authorities did not release additional details about how investigators identified the vehicle or what evidence led to the charges. The case will now proceed through the court system.
Johnson is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty in court.
