The Binghamton City School District had closed Calvin Coolidge Elementary for almost half of the school year due to an asbestos issue, and now they have discovered that the problem hasn’t gone away. School officials now say that asbestos particles have become airborne, and while the levels were not overly high, they exceed the threshold allowed by the Department of Health. The district is already spending about $3 million to rebuild the MacArthur Elementary School, and now fixing the issue at Coolidge will be an additional $300,000. Now the district’s administrators will have to determine how to pay for the work, and may have to use the district’s savings account.
