Multiple fire crews responded to a fire at a house in Chenango on Tuesday, but they were unable to save the home. The call came in late Tuesday morning for a fire at 794 Castle Creek Road near Beers Road. No one was inside the home when the fire began. The owner of the home, Daryl Steward, also owns a property next door, and he lives in the adjacent home. The smoke from the fire could be seen for miles from as far away as Whitney Point. Crews battled the flames for over an hour as the house burned to the ground. Firefighters had to bring water from tankers, with the nearest fire hydrant being three miles away. Seward’s brother was living in the house and lost all of his possessions. Crews from Chenango, Whitney Point, and Choconut Center all responded to the fire, along with the tankers. Broome County Fire Investigators are currently trying to determine what sparked the flames.
