A car crash Saturday evening in the Town of Maine proved to be fatal. 51-year-old Robert Norris of Endicott was pronounced dead upon his arrival at the hospital after he crashed his vehicle into a utility pole. Norris’ passenger, Penny Barton of Maine, was admitted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. There is no word at this time on her condition. The accident took place on Route 26 near Roberts Road. A man riding by on his motorcycle noticed the crash vehicle, and after stopping to help, found the two people unconscious in the vehicle. Responding firefighters were able to extract Norris and Barton from the vehicle. Route 26 had to be closed to all traffic throughout the rest of the day while accident reconstruction and NYSEG teams worked at the scene. NYSEG had to repair downed power lines which caused outages for eight people. State Police, along with fire departments from Maine, Union Center, and West Corners all responded to the scene. At this time, speed and alcohol are considered to be factors in the crash.
