The Tioga Central School District adopted a new budget last night that still requires taxpayers to pay more. The updated budget has a tax levy increase of 17 percent– down from the original 30 percent tax levy increase, which was voted down. At a tax levy increase of 17 percent, taxpayers would pay an additional $161 for a home assessed at $100,000. The school board was able to decrease the tax levy because of an anonymous donation of almost 300,000 dollars — which will help prevent extra-curricular activities from being cut. With the 17 percent tax levy, a lifeguard position will be cut and the school will not back-fill a full time custodial position. The district will only receive the 300,000 dollar donation if this proposed budget is approved. If voters reject the budget, the board will go to a contingency budget– which would eliminate all extra-curricular programs. Voting is scheduled to take place from 11 to 8 on June 16th at the Tioga Middle School Gym.
