The Owego football team held off a late Johnson City rally and spoiled the Wildcats first-ever night home game as the Indians prevailed 28-20 Friday in a game heard live on WEBO.
Patrick Bilbrey was the man again for Owego, catching two long passes for touchdowns, running a fake punt 72 yards to paydirt, and heaving a desperation pass that was caught by Will Gladney for the fourth Owego score.
Owego starts divisional play this week with a home game against Oneonta. The Yellowjackets were in Waverly on Friday, where they lost to the Wolverines 63-18. Waverly was led once again by quarterback Peyton Miller, who threw for 175 yards and four touchdowns while adding 115 yards and two more scores on the ground to lead the Wolverines to another home win. They are 2-0 and head to Norwich this week.
In other games from the weekend, Tioga defeated Seton 57-20, Newark Valley was all over Spencer-Van Etten 54-8 and Maine-Endwell won a battle of defending state champions 28-21 in Chenango Forks.
The Syracuse Orange rode a second half surge to a 30-17 win over Wake Forest at the Carrier Dome on Saturday. Freshman quarterback Eric Dungey threw for two second-half scores, including an 89-yard hookup with Brisly Estime. Syracuse is home to Central Michigan this week.
In NASCAR, Matt Kenseth dominated at Richmond and drove to victory in the final race of the regular season. The Chase for the Sprint Cup begins Sunday at Chicagoland. Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, and Kyle Busch are the top seeds in the 16-car Chase field.
Finally, the Binghamton Mets were eliminated from the postseason with a 4-2 loss in Reading on Saturday, ending their hopes of a repeat title. Reading will face Bowie for the Eastern League Championship.
