The bill aimed at continuing support for residents of the Broome Developmental Center has been vetoed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The bill, proposed by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo and Assemblyman Clifford Crouch last week, wanted to make sure residents continue to get the help they need after the BDC closes next year. Cuomo said the proposal went against federal mandates which require states to put those needing mental healthcare in the least restrictive setting as possible. The current plan is to send BDC patients to group homes after the center closes. The legislature can vote to override the veto next year.
