Binghamton will receive state funds to demolish a vacant property on the city’s North Side. The city has received more than $500,000 through the Restore New York program, which will be used to demolish the old Big Lots building on State Street and build an $11 million affordable housing project in its place. Mayor Rich David says the building will feature nearly 50 apartments and commercial spaces, which he hopes to turn into a needed grocery store for that section of the city. Other projects across the Southern Tier also received Restore New York funding yesterday, including building renovations in Elmira and Ithaca.
