Sheriff Harder warns of paving scam

Broome County Sheriff David Harder says his office has received telephone calls in recent weeks with complaints of quick-talking salesman who want to pave driveways at a too-good-to-be-true price. Harder says these companies use deceptive tactics to get unsuspecting homeowners to agree to get their driveways paved but it ultimately ends up as a scam. The tactics often involve fake salesmen who knock unsolicited at the front door offering to sell a load of asphalt at a reduced rate.  After a deal is negotiated, the company either uses sub-par material that washes away or bump up the price, exert pressure and demand immediate payment. Harder reminds homeowners to research the company before signing any contracts and insist on a quote that outlines the work to be done along with pricing for materials and labor. If you feel you got scammed, call your local police department.
