The Chemung County Health Department says it is conducting an investigation after eight people tested positive for COVID-19 after all attending an event that was held on July 28, according to county Executive Christopher Moss.

According to health department officials, the original case was someone who traveled to Chemung County from North Carolina to attend the event and has since returned home; however, multiple people were exposed to the virus “due to the lack of proper social distancing and face coverings”.

Chemung County Executive Chris Moss and Public Health Director Pete Buzetti released a statement, reminding everyone of the importance of social distancing and face coverings. Additionally, they stressed caution when having contact with people from states that are currently reporting record high COVID-19 cases.

“As seen in this particular investigation, it only takes one individual to infect several others from just attending an event whereupon social distancing and face coverings are not being strictly adhered to,” said Executive Moss. “Overall, Chemung County and the Southern Tier Region continue to have some of the lowest numbers in the state, but we need to remain constantly vigilant due to how easily the virus can be quickly spread throughout the area.”

Those who have questions on how to safely hold events are asked to contact the County Health Department of visit the County’s website.
