Flags across New York State were flown at half-staff on Monday to honor a firefighter who died in a recent wildfire.

18-year-old Dariel Vasquez was killed while battling the Jennings Creek Wildfire in Orange County. He serves as a New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation aide.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, who called Vasquez’s actions brave, recently issued a statewide burn ban through to Nov. 30th due to dry conditions across the state.
