The company that provides Tioga County’s liability insurance has settled out of court with Cal Harris, who stood trial four times over an 11-year period for the murder of his wife, Michele.
According to the Morning Times, the insurance company settled with Harris for an undisclosed amount.
Michele Harris disappeared on Sept. 11, 2001 and her body has never been found.
Cal Harris was convicted twice by Tioga County juries, but both convictions were overturned.
He was then faced a jury trial in Schoharie County, but the third trial would end in a mistrial when the jury was deadlocked. Finally, Harris was found not guilty by a Schoharie County Judge in a bench trial in 2016.
Harris filed a lawsuit in 2017 against a former Tioga County official and New York State Police Investigators under the Unjust Conviction and Imprisonment Act.
The lawsuit will continue in federal court in Albany on Oct. 27 to determine if Harris’ civil rights were violated.
