Broome County District Attorney F. Paul Battisti announced Monday that Jorge M. Cortina, 40, of Binghamton, has been sentenced to eight years in New York State Prison, followed by three years of post-release supervision for his conviction of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree.
He was additionally sentenced to three (3) to six (6) years in State Prison for his conviction of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, and 364 days in the Broome County Jail for Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the Second Degree. The sentences will run concurrent to one another.
On September 4, 2024, the defendant was stopped in a motor vehicle in the City of Binghamton by members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Strategic Response Group. A subsequent investigation revealed the Defendant to be in possession of over an eighth of an ounce of methamphetamine, a Springfield XD-40 pistol, and a digital scale commonly used to weigh narcotics.
Following a jury trial on July 28, 2025, in Broome County Court, Cortina was found guilty of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, and Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the Second Degree.
“This sentence sends a clear message that those who choose to endanger our neighborhoods by selling narcotics and unlawfully possessing firearms will face serious consequences,” said District Attorney F. Paul Battisti. “Our community is safer today because of the hard work and dedication of law enforcement and our trial team, who remain steadfast in their mission to protect Broome County residents.”
Joseph Nieto, Senior Assistant District Attorney, prosecuted this case for the Broome County District Attorney’s Office with the assistance of District Attorney Investigator Mike Gazdik. The investigation and arrest were made by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Strategic Response Group.
Cortina was sentenced in Broome County Court before the Honorable Carol A Cocchiola.
