New York health officials are reporting the state’s first known measles-associated death in more than 30 years.
The New York State Department of Health says a child in Lewis County died during the ongoing outbreak. As of October 24, the state had recorded 178 measles cases in 2026, including eight in New York City.
Health officials are urging residents to confirm that they are up to date on the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious complications, particularly among young children and people who are not vaccinated. Anyone concerned about exposure or symptoms should contact a health-care provider before arriving at a clinic or emergency department so precautions can be arranged.
