An employee at Upstate Shredding was killed during a fire on Thursday evening.

Owner Adam Weitsman announced on his Facebook page that a “valued and beloved teammate” was killed during an electrical fire in the motor room at the shredder on State Route 38.

The fire was reported at around 5:50 pm. Campville firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions. Despite zero visibility and extreme heat, firefighters made a rapid and aggressive interior entry to search for victims while simultaneously initiating fire attack.

One victim was located and removed from the structure. First responders began immediate lifesaving care, but despite determined efforts, the victim could not be revived.

Firefighters from Campville, Owego, Newark Valley and Southside responded to the scene.

“We commend the actions of the first responding firefighters, who operated under intense and demanding conditions. Our deepest condolences are extended to the family, employees, and all those affected by this tragic incident. Thank you to our mutual aid departments,” a post from the Campville Fire Department said on Facebook.

Investigators from the New York State Police and Tioga County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the incident.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital for treatment. One is reportedly being held overnight, while the other is expected to be released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
