The Vestal Rail Trail celebrated the grand opening of its newest trail this week.
Phase three of the Rail Trail extends the existing Greenway Trail by half a mile and also includes a new parking lot on Vestal Road. There is also an additional trail from the parking lot to Harold Moore Park.
The project also included a new right-turn lane and improvements to a pedestrian crosswalk.
“The Vestal Rail Trail is a community hub that encourages active lifestyles, reduces vehicle congestion, and helps us meet our sustainability goals by creating communities that prioritize walkability and access to green space. I was proud to join Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Town Supervisor Sexton, and community partners to celebrate the completion of their third phase of expansion. The new extension expands the opportunity for connection, recreation, and wellbeing, making it easier for more Vestal residents and families to access safe, beautiful public spaces. Thank you to the Town of Vestal, Broome County, Broome Bituminous, Newman Development Corporation, and all of the local leaders and residents who made this possible,” State Sen. Lea Webb said in a Facebook post.
The Vestal Rail Trail has been around for four decades and was funded by the Newman Development Group.
The Phase Three Project was funded by the New York State Department of Transportation as well as the Town of Vestal and Broome County.
